The Language Awareness Campaign

The Language Awareness Campaign is aimed at advising the parents of young children (0 to 5 years of age) as well as expectant parents, living in the Gaeltacht, of the advantages of choosing and using the Irish language as the household language and to encourage them accordingly.

Overview

It’s a small world!

Communications is the key to today’s world. The ability to communicate in more than one language gives a distinct advantage.

Today, more than 65% of the world’s population speak at least two languages in their everyday lives! 50 million people in Europe use a language that’s different from the official language of the country in which they live!

Ireland, too, is a bilingual country. People speak Irish and English everyday, in every part of the country. Your child could be bilingual too, and could benefit from all of the rewards it brings.

You don’t have to be a native speaker to help your child speak Irish. Here we offer some practical advice and answer some of the questions you may have about helping your child learn to speak Irish as well as English, and indeed, about their general language development.

Think about all the advantages of having your child speak two languages! Think of all the fun you and your children will have together! Think of the special bond that will be created by living a language that is as unique as your child is!

Good Luck!
Go n-éirí an bóthar leat!
