The Language Awareness Campaign

The Language Awareness Campaign is aimed at advising the parents of young children (0 to 5 years of age) as well as expectant parents, living in the Gaeltacht, of the advantages of choosing and using the Irish language as the household language and to encourage them accordingly.

Benefits of bilingualism

  • Children who learn two languages have a head start when reading and counting. They often do better in exams later on
  • Having more than one language can give children a sound foundation for learning a third or even fourth. The learning of a third language is facilitated by learning a second
  • The gift of the Irish language will open a whole treasure trove of stories, history, song, drama and dance and culture to your children.
  • All languages can cope with our needs and Irish is no different. Irish has its own unique experience and value
  • Irish is officially recognised as a State language. Two languages offer a better choice of work. Many employers ask for bilingual skills and your child will have the advantage of having an Ghaeilge as an asset
  • Being at ease with both languages will provide your children with the opportunity to make new friends. It gives your child the ability to communicate with people she / he would otherwise not have had the chance to know
  • Think positive. Having the gift of an Ghaeilge will have a positive effect on your child’s mental growth and will enrich and enhance your child‘s mental development
  • Your child will have more flexibility in thinking, greater sensitivity to language and a better ear for listening
  • Not only will your child appreciate the culture and heritage of the Irish language, but it will also open the door to other cultures and will help your child understand and appreciate other cultures.
