The Language Awareness Campaign

The Language Awareness Campaign is aimed at advising the parents of young children (0 to 5 years of age) as well as expectant parents, living in the Gaeltacht, of the advantages of choosing and using the Irish language as the household language and to encourage them accordingly.

Campaign background and objectives

This Language Awareness Campaign is being organised by Údarás na Gaeltachta in association with the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.

The need for such a campaign was highlighted in the report of Coimisiún na Gaeltachta  published in 2002 and was subsequently progressed by the committee established by Minister Éamon Ó Cuív in order to advise him of the measures necessary to give practical implementation to the recommendations contained in that report. The committee advised that a Language Awareness Campaign aimed in particular at the parents of young children in Gaeltacht areas in the 0 to 5 age group and indeed at expectant parents should be initiated.

The primary objective of the Campaign is to highlight the advantages of choosing and using Irish as the predominant language of the family.

The following elements are included as part of the campaign:
  • Television and radio advertising campaign
  • Support material (posters and information booklet)
  • A website providing information and advice
The support materials will be distributed primarily through preschooling, and childcare services operating in Gaeltacht areas as well as other relevant Gaeltacht based organisations.
