The Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs was established by the Government in 2000 and Éamon Ó Cuív T.D appointed as Minister. There are 240 people or so employed in the Department which has its Gaeltacht headquarters in na Forbacha, Galway. The Department is responsible, inter alia, for the Irish language and Gaeltacht affairs.
The economic, infrastructural and social development of the Gaeltacht as well as the strengthening of the Irish language as the predominant community language of the Gaeltacht is a key objective of the Department, particularly in the context of the transmission of the language from one generation to the next. It seeks to achieve this objective by implementing various schemes and measures administered by both the Department itself and by organisations which operate under its auspices –
Údarás na Gaeltachta amongst them.
