The Language Awareness Campaign

The Language Awareness Campaign is aimed at advising the parents of young children (0 to 5 years of age) as well as expectant parents, living in the Gaeltacht, of the advantages of choosing and using the Irish language as the household language and to encourage them accordingly.

Background to Údarás

Údarás na Gaeltachta is a state development agency with a statutory brief to develop the economy of the Gaeltacht and to promote and maintain the Irish language as the predominant language of Gaeltacht communities. The task of the organisation is to develop the economy of the Gaeltacht so as to facilitate the maintenance and extension of Irish as the principal means of communication in the Gaeltacht.

An tÚdarás is an authority that was devised to encourage and develop employment and enterprise in Gaeltacht areas. The term "Gaeltacht" describes those areas where the Irish language is the community language. The Gaeltacht covers extensive parts of counties Donegal, Mayo, Galway and Kerry, and also parts of counties Cork, Meath and Waterford.

An tÚdarás promotes schemes of employment through the development of local natural resources, skills and entrepreneurial abilities and by attracting investors to the Gaeltacht. Údarás na Gaeltachta combines its economic development role with supporting community, cultural and language-development activities by working with local communities and organisations.

Údarás na Gaeltachta’s headquarters are at Na Forbacha in County Galway. They also have regional offices in Donegal, Mayo, Cork and Kerry. The Board of Údarás na Gaeltachta comprises 20 members, seventeen of whom are directly elected by the electorate of the Gaeltacht, the other three being appointed by the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.
